Most of us are struggling to live with intention. Our current lifestyle does not give us the liberty to enjoy even the simplest pleasures of life. We wait for the weekends to live our best life. But by the time the weekend rolls in, we are too exhausted to do anything.

We are basically living life on autopilot: just living to work! We are constantly striving to achieve one thing or the other in life. But nothing is enough to bring us the peace we desire. For most, that’s what life is. And, for some, that’s what life will ever be.

However, that is not how life has to be!  We need to stop (at some point in our life) and think, ‘what am I doing with my life?. More importantly, we need to ask ourselves, ‘Is this what I should be doing with my life?

Once you answer these questions, you can start working on ways to make your present better. This is where intentional living comes. But what exactly is intentional living, and how does a person start living with an intention? If you are wondering this, we have got you covered. This article will tell you everything you need to know about living intentionally! So let’s get started.

What Is Intentional Living?

Intentional living

Think of intentional living as removing your car that has been on autopilot to manual and riding to the destination you want to go to. This is what it means to live with an intention. It’s different for each individual (of course), but it generally means living life with a purpose. It means reflecting on your life, figuring out your beliefs and values, and living your life according to those values and beliefs.

Intentional living is all about making your life something that brings you joy and happiness. It makes you feel full-filled, content. It is all about removing those things in your life that don’t bring you peace and happiness and replacing them with things that do. But this is a lifestyle commitment. I know it sounds scary and demanding when I say it like it, but listening to your heart isn’t that scary, is it?

How To Live with Intention?

When it comes to what intentional living looks like for each person, well, it depends. For some, it might be evaluating their career choice. For others, it might be thinking about the friends they surround themselves with. No two people live the same life, so the choices that they would need to make will not be the same either. To put it simply, intentional living is all about creating good habits and quit bad ones. They can be on your own, with your partner, with your friends and family, that’s all up to you. But these good choices are the choices that will force you to stop living your life on autopilot and will teach you how to be happy and content.

Living with intention

1. Search And Define Your Core Values

One of the first things you need to do when it comes to intentional living is figuring out your core values. These core values will help you make the changes you need to achieve the life you want. Whether it’s freedom, love, simplicity, it all depends on each person.

To put it in better and simpler words, let’s look at some examples, shall we? If for someone, (one of) their core values is love, they can start looking If they are surrounded by people who love them. Does your partner love you? Do your friends love you? If The answer is yes, you are good to go. But if it is a no, ask yourself what are the changes you can make to surround yourself with love. Some of these changes that you might have to make might be really difficult as well as overwhelming. You will need to have the courage to do the right thing. This of your life in the long run, and once you make those choices, your future self will thank you.

2. Answer The ‘Whys’ in Your Life

This is one of the most important steps when it comes to intentional living? You cannot live with an intention unless you answer the whys in your life because these whys will help you realize the changes you should and should not bring into your life.

Here are some of the questions you can ask yourself that might help you:

  • Why are you with your current partner?
  • Why did you choose your job or your career?
  • Why are your friends actually your friends?
  • Why do you or do you not work out?
  • Why do you eat healthily or eat junk food?
  • What drives you in life?
  • What is your passion?
  • How do you perceive life?

Remember, when you are answering these questions, you have to be completely honest. Dishonesty will not take you anywhere. Answering many of these types of questions makes a person realize that they might not have any reasons for them. Most of them might just be ‘because I have to. Or the answers might not make them happy, make them confused, or even conflicted. This, in turn, can convince you or encourage you to make these changes in your life and thus living with an intention.

3. The Purpose of Living with An Intention

A lot of people confuse intentional living with having your life figured out. This is not true, at all. You do not need to have a destination set and ready to go. You can figure all of that while you are on the journey because your journey matters more than your destination.

Once you take hold of your life and make your own choices, you will realize that everything else comes really easy. So do not let this hold you back and stop you from living a better and happier life filled with peace.

4. Make Sure What You Feel in Your Heart Matches Your Actions

I feel like this tip sums up living with an intention really well. Every action, every choice you make, should be done if your heart agrees with it. Don’t do something if you don’t feel good about it from the inside, like doing a specific job. You know you are not happy with the job. It does not bring you peace and happiness and is just not the right thing for you. However, you continue to do that job. This is precisely what you are NOT supposed to do. Until and unless your heart and your actions align, you cannot achieve true happiness.

5. Always Hold Yourself Accountable

You will not be able to change your lifestyle until and unless you hold yourself accountable for your actions. If you decide to start working out, you need to make sure that you are consistent and keep up with what you have decided. Because intentional living is a lifelong thing, not something you stick to for a month and then leave it. So, you need to hold yourself accountable to ensure you are keeping up with your choices.

You can do this by keeping a journal or constantly having a reminder on your phone. You also need to hold yourself accountable before you even make a choice. Always ask yourself if that choice is aiding you to live the life you want to live or not.

What Intentional Living Is Not

It’s important to know what intentional living is not, just how it is essential to understand what it is.

Intentional living is not a magic fix. Hopefully, it will make your problems easier to manage and fix, but it’s not one of those tapes you put over a leaking pipe to stop the water from gushing out. It’s also not a magical thing that will make everything better instantly. It’s also not a one-time thing. You can’t live intentionally for ‘one day and think, “that’s bound to make a difference” …because it will not. You have to stick with it to see a change in your life.

Final Notes

These are the tips that will help you in this journey of living with an intention. Remember, you aren’t perfect; neither will this journey be. You will make mistakes, some that will be easily manageable, others, not really. It is these mistakes that you will need to learn from. This way you will learn, get better. See what’s good for you and what isn’t. There might be some choices that you think are good for you, but they aren’t. Unless you make them (and learn from them), you won’t know what they are.

As long as you have strength and commitment, all of this will become a lot easier. So,  happy intentions!
