For many of us, the last twelve months were a mixed bag. We had our highs and lows, and we did our best to navigate whatever life threw our way. As we remain hopeful for the new year, it is essential to remember how important it is to take care of ourselves. That is why, in this article, we will discuss eight ways to practice self-care every day.

What does self-care mean?

According to the World Health Organization, self-care is “the ability of individuals, families, and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a healthcare provider.” (1)
In short, it is any activity we do conscientiously in order to improve our mental, emotional, and physical health.

Here are is a list of self-care activities you should include in your routine this year:

1- Get more sleep

A good night’s sleep is crucial for our body and mind to recharge. It is as important as a good diet or exercising. Good sleep improves your mood, concentration and reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. According to experts, young adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep. (2)

2- Meditate

Meditation helps increase awareness of ourselves and our surroundings. Many studies suggest that meditation may calm the mind, improve attention, help cope with illness, and promote better quality sleep.

3- Drink more water

Staying hydrated is extremely important for our body to carry out its functions. Drinking enough water helps deliver nutrients to our cells and allows the kidney to work properly to eliminate waste through urination. It also regulates our body temperature and lubricates our joints. To help you stay hydrated, keep a water bottle with you and drink gradually throughout the day. You can try flavored water to improve the taste.

4- Start a gratitude journal

A gratitude journal can help focus your attention on the positive things in your life and give you a new perspective of what is important. It also makes you aware of your thoughts and emotions. Keeping a gratitude journal can improve your mood and your relationship with others. Whenever you’re going through challenging times, go back to your journal, count your blessings, and smile!

5- Take a break from social media

Taking care of yourself also means learning to distance yourself from anything that is potentially addictive or bad for your mental health. Social media is a place where we can connect with others or express our creativity. Unfortunately, it can also be very toxic. We can easily be consumed by the virtual world in which most people seem to have a happy and perfect life. This can negatively affect our satisfaction with life. So it is essential to often disconnect from social media and reconnect with real life.

6- Have your “Me time”

Women can do it all! But we also need to rest. As workers, business owners, partners, moms, we barely take time for ourselves. And yet, taking care of ourselves is as much important as caring for our family. Personal time isn’t a luxury. It is a necessity. It is like putting your emergency oxygen mask in a plane before helping the person next to you. Schedule your “me time”, set a date with your girls, get a massage or a pedicure, go to movies, take time to do your hair, your make up or do anything that makes you happy personally.

7- Make your health a priority

We cannot overstate how important our health is. It should be our number one priority. This means that every decision we make and every step we take should consider our well-being. It also means that we should learn to take a break from work when we feel the need. Exercise regularly and eat healthy foods. Most importantly, go to your doctor when you feel like something is wrong physically or mentally.

8- Walk away from toxic people

We all know someone that is emotionally unhealthy for us. It can be a family member, a co-worker, a friend, or a partner. Whoever it is, they can be highly manipulative, and you may feel anxious, drained around them. You should learn to recognize that kind of person. Trust your gut and walk away for your happiness, maybe temporarily or permanently. You don’t need anyone’s permission to do so!
